Read that table looking for the traps rather than the pattern:

  • Japan runs at 100 V — the lowest mains voltage of any major market. A product rated "110 V" is not automatically fine in Japan; at 100 V it is running 10% under nominal, which matters for motors, compressors and heating elements.
  • Japan is split down the middle on frequency. East of the Fuji River (Tokyo, Sendai, Sapporo) is 50 Hz; west (Osaka, Nagoya, Hiroshima) is 60 Hz. If your product has a synchronous motor or a mains-timed clock, one SKU does not cover Japan.
  • The Philippines is 220 V at 60 Hz with Type A sockets. Voltage says Europe, plug says America, frequency says America. It is the single most misread market on this table.
  • Taiwan is 110 V, not 220 V like mainland China 130 km away.
  • Brazil is genuinely dual. São Paulo is 127 V, Brasília and Recife are 220 V. The plug (Type N) is the same either way, which is exactly why the voltage has to be printed.

Nail it down in one line: a plug that fits is not the same as a voltage that works, and neither one proves the product is legal to sell there.

The Three Numbers Have to Travel Together

A spec sheet that lists "AC 220 V" and stops has told the buyer almost nothing. Voltage, frequency and plug type are one fact expressed in three parts, and dropping any part shifts the guessing onto your customer.

Voltage: state the range, not the nominal

Write 100–240 V if the power supply genuinely accepts it. Write 220–240 V if it does not. Never write 220 V when you mean 220–240 V — a UK buyer at 230 V nominal (with a permitted +10% swing to 253 V) will ask whether your 220 V unit survives it, and you will spend two emails answering what one label would have said.

Frequency: 50 Hz, 60 Hz, or both

Switching power supplies usually take 50/60 Hz without comment. Anything with an induction motor, a transformer, a compressor or a mains-referenced timer does not. If your product is 50 Hz only, that single line disqualifies the Americas, Japan-west, Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines before anyone wastes time on a quotation.

Plug type: name the letter and the standard

"European plug" is not a spec. Type C (CEE 7/16) and Type F (CEE 7/4, Schuko) look similar and are not the same — Type C is unearthed, Type F carries earth contacts. If your product needs a protective earth, shipping it with a Type C cord is a compliance failure, not a packing preference.

Certification Marks Are Not Interchangeable

This is where suppliers lose the most credibility. A buyer sees "CE certified" on a listing aimed at the US market and immediately downgrades their opinion of the whole catalogue, because CE has no standing in the United States.

Two rules that save real money. First, a CB Scheme report from an IECEE lab is your cheapest multi-market path — it is recognised as a base report by most member schemes, but every market still layers on national differences, and plug and voltage differences are almost always among them. Second, the plug is separately approved in several markets. Australia and Brazil in particular treat the plug as its own approvable component; a certificate for the appliance does not automatically cover the cordset.

The Cost of Getting This Wrong Is Not the Adapter

A wrong-voltage or wrong-plug shipment is the most expensive category of return there is, because it fails on arrival, at scale, in one lot. Nobody returns a single unit — the whole PO comes back or gets discounted.

Run the arithmetic before you assume it is a small problem. A 500-unit order at $38 landed cost with a wrong cordset is $19,000 sitting in a warehouse that needs rework, plus inbound freight, plus the discount you will offer to keep the account. Here is the part most suppliers skip. The buyer scanning twelve supplier listings on a B2B marketplace is not opening your attachment. They are looking at image two and image three, and if the electrical spec is not visible there, they assume you have not thought about their market.

The fix is not a prettier photo. It is a spec callout locked onto the product image at the point it applies — a leader line from the rating plate showing 100–240 V · 50/60 Hz, a second one from the cordset showing Type G (BS 1363), and a mark strip along the bottom showing the certification logos that apply to that market.
