Enter the mattress, the rail height above the base at its lowest and your child’s height. Each check uses the numbers in the tables on this page.
All in centimetres. 1 in = 2.54 cm.
A 69.9 × 132.1 cm mattress, 12.7 cm thick, meets the US minimum of 69.2 × 131.1 cm and the 15.2 cm limit.
The 16 CFR 1241 minimum and the 6 in limit printed on every crib; push the mattress into a corner and check for gaps.
The rail is 67.3 cm above the mattress base at its lowest; the US rule asks at least 66 cm.
Measured from the top of the mattress base at its lowest. Lower the base once the child can pull to standing.
At 80 cm your child is under the 89 cm at which the crib should no longer be used.
The crib makers’ warning: stop when the child can climb out or reaches 35 in, whichever comes first.

28 ± 5/8 in (71 ± 1.6 cm) wide and 52 3/8 ± 5/8 in (133 ± 1.6 cm) long, measured between the innermost surfaces at the level of the mattress base (16 CFR 1219).
At least 27 1/4 × 51 5/8 in (69.2 × 131.1 cm), the 16 CFR 1241 minimum, and no more than 6 in (15.2 cm) thick. Push it into a corner: a gap over 1 1/2 in (3.8 cm) means it does not fit.
At least 26 in (66 cm) from the top of the mattress base at its lowest to the top of the side. Delta Children’s Heartland gives 26.5 in (67.3 cm).
Crib makers’ warnings say to stop when the child can climb out or reaches 35 in (89 cm); the AAP suggests a bed at about 3 ft (91.4 cm).
No more than 2 3/8 in (6 cm), about the width of a soda can, says CPSC.
Away from windows and window-covering cords, preferably on another wall (CPSC); the AAP advises room sharing for at least the first 6 months.
Some leave a gap: IKEA’s SNIGLAR has 17.1 cm (6 3/4 in) free under the crib and two base heights, while the GONATT builds a drawer into the base and stands 112.1 cm tall.
Full-size cribs sold into the US must meet 16 CFR 1219, so buyers ask the inside size, the mattress positions, the rail height, the warning labels and whether conversion kits exist.
