Dimensions / Furniture / Dining chairs / Armchair
A dining armchair, or carver, has arms whose tops sit about 24–27.5 in (61–70 cm) off the floor: Ethan Allen’s Cassian is 24 in, Emeco’s Navy armchair 70 cm. The arms must clear the table apron: DutchCrafters wants about 1 3/4 in (4.4 cm) between the arm and the apron, and says armchairs are unlikely to fit under an apron lower than 25 in (63.5 cm). Arms add about 6 in (15.2 cm) to a chair’s width, so fewer fit along a table.

Enter the chair’s seat, width and arm height and your table: the height to its apron and the side you will seat. Each check uses the numbers in the tables on this page.
All in centimetres. 1 in = 2.54 cm.
The arms are 61 cm high, 11 cm under the 72 cm apron; at least 4.4 cm lets the chair push in.
DutchCrafters’ figure; if the apron is lower than 25 in, armchairs are unlikely to fit. Measure to the apron, not the top.
The seat is 26.3 cm below the table’s underside, within the 25–30 cm the guide gives.
The seat gap is measured to the same apron edge; IKEA Switzerland gives 28–32 cm.
Each chair takes 63.5 cm (60 cm a diner, or its 58.4 cm width plus 5.1 cm), so 180 cm seats 2; you want 2.
Arms add about 6 in to a chair, so fewer fit along the side. IKEA’s 60 cm a diner, or the chair’s width plus Thos. Moser’s 2 in between chairs, whichever is more.

About 24–27.5 in (61–70 cm) to the top: Ethan Allen’s Cassian is 24 in (61 cm), its Gilbert and Artemis 25 in (63.5 cm), Herman Miller’s Eames upholstered armchair 26 1/2 in (67.3 cm) and Emeco’s Navy armchair 70 cm.
Measure from the floor to the underside of the apron: DutchCrafters wants about 1 3/4 in (4.4 cm) between the arm and the apron, and says that under an apron lower than 25 in (63.5 cm) armchairs are unlikely to fit.
About 6 in (15.2 cm), says DutchCrafters; Ethan Allen’s Cassian is 19 in (48.3 cm) wide as a side chair and 23 in (58.4 cm) as an armchair.
At the ends: Ethan Allen puts host chairs at the head of a rectangular table and armless chairs along the sides, and uses only armless chairs at round or square tables.
A dining chair with arms. The Cambridge Dictionary describes a carver as a hard chair with parts to rest your arms on, usually with wooden spindles.
Only if the arms clear: Thos. Moser recommends a table without an apron if you want chairs to sit fully under the top, and IKEA keeps the TOSSBERG’s arms short enough to sit close.
Armchairs are sold as host chairs, so buyers ask the arm height and the apron height it clears, the overall width against the side chair, the seat height and the weight it is tested to.
