Dimensions / Furniture / Dining chairs / Side chair
A dining side chair is an armless chair with a seat about 16.5–19 in (42–48 cm) high and 16.5–22 in (42–56 cm) wide (dimensions.com); IKEA’s LISABO is 46 × 51.1 × 80 cm with a 45.1 cm seat. Leave 25–30 cm (10–12 in) from the seat to the table’s underside, at least 60 cm of table side per diner (IKEA) and 36 in (91.4 cm) behind the chairs (Room & Board).

Enter the chair and your table: the height to its underside, the side you will seat between the legs and the floor behind. Each check uses the numbers in the tables on this page.
All in centimetres. 1 in = 2.54 cm.
The seat is 26.9 cm below the table’s underside, within the 25–30 cm the guide gives.
IKEA measures to the bottom edge of the table, not the top; IKEA Switzerland gives 28–32 cm.
Each chair takes 60 cm (60 cm a diner, or its 46 cm width plus 5.1 cm), so 180 cm seats 3; you want 3.
IKEA’s 60 cm a diner, or the chair’s width plus Thos. Moser’s 2 in between chairs, whichever is more. Measure between the table legs.
You have 100 cm behind the table edge; 91.4 cm leaves room to pull a chair out and get by.
Room & Board’s minimum, up to 54 in near storage and busy areas; IKEA Singapore gives 80 cm.

dimensions.com gives a seat 16.5–19 in (42–48 cm) high on a chair 16.5–22 in (42–56 cm) wide. IKEA’s LISABO is 46 × 51.1 × 80 cm and Room & Board’s Afton 45.7 × 53.3 × 81.3 cm.
About 10–12 in (25–30 cm) from the seat to the table’s underside, says IKEA, measured to the bottom edge, not the top; IKEA Switzerland gives 28–32 cm.
Allow at least 60 cm of table side per diner (IKEA), and keep at least 2 in (5.1 cm) between chairs (Thos. Moser).
Room & Board says at least 36 in (91.4 cm), up to 54 in near storage and busy areas; IKEA Singapore leaves 80 cm between the table and the wall.
They slide right under the table, which IKEA says suits smaller spaces, and Ethan Allen uses only armless chairs at round or square tables.
An armless dining chair: dimensions.com defines side chairs as armless chairs with frames that are not completely upholstered. DutchCrafters notes a traditional dining room lines the sides with them and puts armchairs at the ends.
Look for a contract test: IKEA’s ROSENTORP is tested for public use to EN 16139 Level 1, while its LISABO is tested for home use to EN 12520. Both sit at 45.1 cm (17 3/4 in).
Side chairs are bought in sets, so buyers ask the seat height, width and depth, the overall size, the weight they are tested to and whether they come flat-packed.
