An adjustable bar stool raises its seat on a gas lift over a range: Flash Furniture’s CH-122070 goes from 23 to 31.5 in (58.4–80 cm), counter to bar height, and IKEA’s JANINGE from 22 to 29 7/8 in (55.9–75.9 cm). Set it so the seat sits 10–12 in (25.4–30.5 cm) below the counter’s underside. Swivel seats need more room than fixed ones, so allow at least 24 in (61 cm) of counter per stool (NKBA).

Enter the stool’s lowest and highest seat and your counter: its underside, the length you will sit along and the floor behind. Each check uses the numbers in the tables on this page.
All in centimetres. 1 in = 2.54 cm.
To sit 25.4–30.5 cm under your counter the seat should be at 57.1–62.2 cm, and this stool adjusts 58.4–80 cm.
Barstool Comforts: adjustable stools don’t replace measuring for legroom, so set the seat 10–12 in below the underside.
At 61 cm a stool, 190 cm of counter seats 3; you want 3.
Swivel seats turn outward as people sit: Amisco says to leave more room than for fixed stools.
You have 100 cm behind the counter edge; 91.4 cm lets people edge past seated diners.
NKBA’s clearance for edging past; with nobody behind it is 32 in, for a full walkway 44 in.

It depends on the lift: Flash Furniture’s CH-122070 adjusts 23–31.5 in (58.4–80 cm), its DS-810-MOD 24.75–32.75 in (62.9–83.2 cm), and IKEA’s JANINGE 22–29 7/8 in (55.9–75.9 cm).
If its range reaches both: Flash says its CH-122070 adjusts from counter to bar height, and dimensions.com notes adjustable stools suit several table heights if the range allows a comfortable seat.
With the seat 10–12 in (25.4–30.5 cm) below the counter’s underside, and never less than 10 in. Barstool Comforts warns that adjustable stools don’t replace the need to measure for legroom.
Yes. Amisco says to reserve more space for swivel stools, and Barstool Comforts adds 2–3 in (5.1–7.6 cm) between them, on top of NKBA’s 24 in (61 cm) per diner.
Check the rating: Flash Furniture’s gas-lift stools are designed for residential use only, while IKEA’s JANINGE is tested for public use to EN 16139 Level 1 and ANSI/BIFMA X5.1.
Adjustable stools are bought for their range, so buyers ask the lowest and highest seat, the lift type, the swivel, the base diameter and whether the stool is rated for home or commercial use.
