A counter-height stool has a seat about 23–28 in (58–71 cm) high for 35–40 in (89–102 cm) counters and kitchen islands (dimensions.com); IKEA pairs 34–36 in counters with 23–26 in (58.4–66 cm) seats, or 87–91 cm with 60–66 cm. Leave at least 10 in (25.4 cm) from the seat to the counter’s underside, a 15 in (38.1 cm) deep knee space and 24 in (61 cm) of counter per stool (NKBA).

Enter the seat height, then measure your island: floor to the underside of the top, the run of counter you will seat and how far the top overhangs. Each check uses the numbers in the tables on this page.

dimensions.com asks at least 10 in to the underside, Barstool Comforts 10–12 in. Measure the underside, not the top.

dimensions.com puts the seat at 23–28 in (58–71 cm) for counters of 35–40 in (89–102 cm). IKEA’s STIG and FRANKLIN counter stools sit at 24 3/4 in (62.9 cm) and its GLENN at 26 in (66 cm); Muuto’s Fiber is 65 cm.
IKEA pairs 34–36 in counters with 23–26 in (58.4–66 cm) seats, and Amisco a counter 36–38 in high with a 26 in (66 cm) stool. Then check the gap: at least 10 in (25.4 cm) from the seat to the counter’s underside.
NKBA allows a knee space 24 in wide and 15 in deep (61 × 38.1 cm) for each diner at a 36 in (91.4 cm) counter, and 18 in (45.7 cm) deep at a 30 in table.
One for every 24 in (61 cm) of counter, says NKBA; Amisco allows 22–25 in (55.9–63.5 cm) a stool, and more for swivel stools or stools with arms.
Not usually: dimensions.com says counter stools are generally too tall for conventional dining tables, which pair with chair seats of 18–20 in (46–51 cm).
Armless and backless ones can: Boraam says its armless Augusta slides under the countertop when not in use, and dimensions.com that backless stools can often tuck beneath counters.
Counter stools are sold for kitchen islands, so buyers ask the seat height and the counter height it suits, the footrest height, the seat size and whether it swivels or folds.
