Champagne Bottle Dimensions: 75 cl Height and Width, Glass Weight and Pressure

A champagne bottle is built for pressure: champagne holds about 6 bar at 20 °C (Comité Champagne), so the glass is thick. Saverglass’s 75 cl Champenoise Standard is 300 mm tall and 88.4 mm across and weighs 900 g; the Champagne trade’s standard bottle has been cut to 835 g, and lightweight versions weigh 800 g (Verallia) and 725 g (Saverglass). Real 75 cl champagne bottles run 278.8 to 300.5 mm tall, no taller than a Bordeaux, and 85.9 to 101.6 mm across. Most take a 29 mm crown cap for the second fermentation, then a mushroom cork held by a wire cage.

Volumes in millilitres, sizes in millimetres. The brimful capacity is on the maker’s drawing; take the bottle diameter at the widest part of the body, and the case sizes inside.

Size allowed in the EU and USAllowed in both

750 ml is on the EU list for sparkling wine (2007/45/EC) and among the US standards of fill (27 CFR 4.72). An EU-marked bottle of this size may hold up to 10 ml more or less than marked (75/107/EEC).

Sparkling wine has its own, shorter EU list: 125, 200, 375, 750 and 1500 ml.

Bottles fit the caseCase too small

12 bottles 88.2 mm across in a 4 × 3 grid take 352.8 × 264.6 mm, more than the 318 × 246 mm inside this case. Choose a case at least that size inside, or fewer bottles a row.

At 88.2 mm, 4 × 3 champagne bottles need 352.8 × 264.6 mm, far beyond a 12-bottle box made for Bordeaux; EU wine often ships 6 to a case anyway.

HeadspaceWithin the limit

750 ml in a bottle holding 775 ml to the brim leaves 25 ml, 3.2% of its capacity, before the closure goes in; US rules allow up to 6% after closure (27 CFR 4.71).

Berlin Packaging’s 23321P3 holds 775 ml to the brim; champagne makers leave more air than still wine, 72 to 93 mm below the brim on Saverglass sheets.

Questions

What are the dimensions of a champagne bottle?

Saverglass’s 75 cl Champenoise Standard is 300 mm tall and 88.4 mm across; Berlin Packaging’s 23321P3 is 300 × 88.2 mm and O-I’s WP-106 300.05 × 89.69 mm. Wider cuvée shapes reach 101.6 mm (Saverglass Chorus and Terroir).

Is a champagne bottle taller than a wine bottle?

No. Makers’ 75 cl champagne bottles are 278.8 to 300.5 mm tall, the same as or shorter than the 300.50 mm Bordelaise Tradition. They are wider, 85.9 to 101.6 mm, and heavier.

How much pressure is in a champagne bottle?

About 6 bar at 20 °C, says the Comité Champagne, and Wine Spectator puts sparkling wine at 70 to 90 psi. Berlin Packaging rates one 75 cl champenoise bottle for 13 bar.

How much does an empty champagne bottle weigh?

The standard bottle was cut from 900 g to 835 g; Saverglass’s Standard is still offered at 900 g, Verallia’s Ecova 2 weighs 800 g and Saverglass’s Light 26 725 g. Prestige shapes reach 950 g.

Can champagne be sold in any bottle?

No. Champagne gets its second fermentation in glass, and 75 cl and 150 cl bottles must be sold in the bottle where it happened; other sizes may be transferred. The bottles must be bought new.

For glassworks and sparkling wine exporters

Producers ask for the height and body, the glass weight against the 835 g standard, the pressure rating, the crown finish, the fill level, the punt and how many bottles go on a pallet. Mark the real bottle, its finish, shoulder and punt on your own photo in SizeMarker, as in the picture at the top, and send one product card for WhatsApp or WeChat.
