Dimensions / Building materials / Garage doors / Double-car door
A standard double garage door is 16 × 7 ft (4877 × 2134 mm), one wide door for two cars, with widths from 12 to 18 ft and up to 20 ft in Clopay’s Classic Steel line. It is not two singles: two 9 ft doors side by side need an 11 in post between them (Amarr), so they take 19 ft of wall before side room. A double needs reinforcing struts (Amarr’s worked 16 × 8 ft door has three of 2 in), heavier hinges from 12 ft and two installers, and openers are rated by width: Kwikset’s FLEX goes to 16 ft wide and 385 lb. The room around it follows its height, as for a single: 3-3/4 in each side, 12 to 14 in of headroom for torsion springs, and the door height plus 18 in of depth.

A 16 × 7 ft door on torsion springs and 15 in radius track, with a ceiling opener, and the room measured in the garage, are filled in; change the door, the track, the opener or what you measured.
Clearances are the figures Clopay, Amarr and Overhead Door print for their own doors; other makers differ by an inch or so, so go by the installation sheet of the door you buy.
Clopay asks for at least 3-3/4 in (95 mm) on each side of the opening, on the inside wall, for the vertical tracks; you have 5 in (127 mm) on the narrower side.
Wayne Dalton asks for 3-1/2 in, Garaga 6 in; Clopay’s 3-3/4 in is used here.
Clopay asks for 14 in above the opening for torsion springs on a 15 in radius track, plus about 3 in at the centre for the opener, 17 in in all; you have 18 in (457 mm).
On a 15 in radius track Clopay asks for 14 in above a torsion-spring door.
The tracks run back the door height plus 50 in (Amarr, with a ceiling opener): 84 + 50 = 134 in (3404 mm); you have 140 in (3556 mm).
A wide door is no deeper than a single of the same height: depth follows the height.

16 × 7 ft, 4877 × 2134 mm (Clopay); doubles run 12 to 18 ft wide, 8 ft tall versions are offered, and Clopay’s Classic Steel goes to 20 ft.
Two singles need a post between them, at least 11 in (Amarr) or 12 in (Garaga), so two 9 ft doors take 19 ft of wall against 16 ft for one double; the double has one opener but heavier springs and struts.
Amarr’s worked example, a 16 × 8 ft door of 5 sections, takes three 2 in struts; its Hillcrest doors from 16 ft 2 in to 18 ft take four, and doors up to 14 ft none. Garaga fits three from 12 ft 4 in.
One rated for the width: Kwikset’s FLEX goes to 16 ft wide, 8 ft high and 385 lb, Hörmann’s SilentDrive 7560 to 18 × 10 ft and Raynor’s Prodigy III to 18 ft wide.
The same as a single of the same height: 3-3/4 in each side, 12 to 14 in of headroom for torsion springs (Clopay), and the door height plus 18 in of depth, or plus 50 in with an opener (Amarr).
Up-and-over doubles are 14 × 7 ft (4267 × 2134 mm) or 16 × 7 ft (4877 × 2134 mm), retractable only (Novoferm UK); sectional doubles are metric, such as 5000 × 2125 mm.
Buyers of doubles ask for the width in their system (16 ft or 4877 mm), the section count, the struts and their size, the hinge and roller grade, the spring system and the opener it suits, the wind rating where it applies, and how the door is crated, since a 16 ft section will not go in a carton. Mark those on a photo of your own door with SizeMarker, like the picture at the top, and share one card in WhatsApp or WeChat.
