Dimensions / Industrial & logistics / Gaylord boxes / Rectangular
A rectangular Gaylord is a four-walled corrugated bin with a separate lid, built on the 48 × 40 in GMA pallet footprint (FedEx). Uline stocks them 48 x 40" at 24, 36 or 48" tall, plus 48 x 48" squares. What one holds is set by its seller, not by a standard: Uline gives 100 lbs. for its 51 ECT double-wall boxes, which must not be double stacked, and 1,500 lbs. (680 kg) for its 1,100# triple-wall boxes. That 1,100 names a puncture test of the board in Rule 41, so it says nothing about the load. Sizes differ too: Uline’s triple-wall chart is outside, with 46 3/4 x 38 3/4" inside, while its double-wall table is inside. The name goes back to the Gaylord Container Company of St. Louis (Wikipedia).

Uline’s S-4931, CHEP’s 48 × 40 in pallet and ONE’s 40 ft are filled in. Enter your goods; each check uses the numbers in the tables on this page.
Sizes in millimetres, weights in kilograms (1 in = 25.4 mm, 1 lb = 0.4536 kg). Measure the Gaylord’s body outside; each one sits on its own pallet, in straight columns. Stack only as high as the seller says.
600 kg of goods is 80 kg under the 680 kg the seller rates this Gaylord for.
Filled in: Uline’s S-4931, a 1,100# triple wall Gaylord rated 1,500 lbs (680 kg). Uline’s double-wall Gaylords hold 100 lbs. and must not be double stacked.
A 1219 × 1016 mm Gaylord matches the 1219 × 1016 mm pallet, flush with its edges and not over them.
S-4931 measures 48 x 40 x 36" outside, 46 3/4 x 38 3/4" inside, on CHEP’s 48 × 40 in pallet. FedEx: overhang can reduce compression strength by as much as 32 percent.
Taking 1219 × 1016 mm of floor each, they go 20 per layer, 1 high: 20, enough for your 20. They stand 1055 mm on their pallets, and 20 × 643 kg = 12860 kg is within the 26840 kg payload.
ONE’s 40 ft is 12,032 × 2,350 × 2,390 mm inside with a 26,840 kg payload. Uline gives no stacking figure for its triple-wall Gaylords, so one high is filled in.

Its base matches the 48 × 40 in GMA pallet. Uline’s come 24, 36 or 48" tall on that base, and 48 x 48" too; the triple-wall ones are measured outside, so 46 3/4 x 38 3/4" is what you get inside.
Whatever its seller rates it for. Uline: 100 lbs. (45 kg) double wall, 1,500 lbs. (680 kg) for 1,100# triple wall, 1,900 lbs. for its 1,300 lb. test box stapled to a pallet. Global Industrial prints much lower capacities for similar board, so get the figure from your own supplier in writing.
A grade of the board, found by a puncture test in inch oz per inch of tear; it is not the weight the box takes. Rule 41 pairs 1100 with 90 ECT and limits a certified triple-wall box to 280 lb and 120 in of length + width + depth, which a 48 x 40 x 36" Gaylord already exceeds at 124 in.
Uline forbids double stacking its double-wall Gaylords and publishes no stacking figure for its triple-wall ones. Large flat walls also bulge: DS Smith tells of an exporter whose rectangular boxes bulged too much to load into containers.
Wikipedia traces it to the Gaylord Container Company of St. Louis, maker of the first bulk bins, which Crown Zellerbach bought in 1955.
Buyers of resin, scrap, parts and produce ask whether the Gaylord is double or triple wall, how much goes in each, its outside size on the pallet and the gross weight per pallet. Mark the real box, pallet and weights on your own product photo in SizeMarker, as in the picture at the top, and send one product card for WhatsApp or WeChat.
