Dimensions / Building materials / Tiles / Wood-look plank tile
Wood-look porcelain planks come in US sizes from 6 × 24 to 8 × 48 in and metric ones from 20 × 120 to 26,5 × 180 cm, and the size is nominal: Daltile’s 8 x 48 is 7-3/4 × 46-15/16 in, RAKO’s 20×120 198 × 1198 mm. They are 5/16 in to 11.3 mm thick. With a side over 18 in, ANSI A108.02 caps the running-bond offset at 33% unless the maker says otherwise, and asks for an average joint of at least 1/8 in (3 mm) on rectified planks or 3/16 in (4.5 mm) on non-rectified, plus the edge warpage. The floor has to be flat to 1/8 in in 10 ft (3 mm in 3 m).

RAKO’s BOARD 20 × 120 cm is filled in. Enter your floor, box, joint and offset; each check follows a figure or ANSI rule on this page.
Coverage per box is the maker’s printed figure: some makers count the nominal size, some the actual size, so take it from the box or the sheet.
20 m² plus 10% for cuts is 22 m²: 23 boxes of 0.96 m² (4 pieces each). Your 23 boxes cover it.
RAKO’s BOARD 20 × 120 cm, 4 planks to a 0.96 m² box, is filled in for 20 m² plus 10% for cuts.
With a side over 450 mm, the joint must average 3 mm for rectified tile plus 0.8 mm of warpage, 3.8 mm, and the offset stays within 33%. Your 4 mm joint at 33% passes.
A rectified plank with Laticrete’s example 0.8 mm of warpage needs a 3.8 mm average joint, so 4 mm is filled in, at the 33% offset cap.
For tile with an edge of 375 mm or more, the surface may vary by 3 mm in 3 m; your 2 mm gap is within it.
With an edge over 375 mm the floor may vary only 3 mm in 3 m; a 2 mm gap is an example.

| OffsetANSI A108.02 4.3.8.2 (Laticrete; Emser) | Where the side being offset is over 18 in (450 mm), the offset is at most 33% unless the tile maker says otherwise |
| Joint for running bondANSI A108.02 4.3.8.1 (Laticrete) | Any side over 18 in: an average of at least 1/8 in (3 mm) rectified or 3/16 in (4.5 mm) non-rectified, plus the warpage of the longest edge |
| Worked exampleLaticrete | Rectified tile with 1/32 in (0.8 mm) of edge warpage: 1/8 + 1/32 = 5/32 in (4 mm) on average |
| Three times the size rangeANSI A108.02 4.3.8 (CTEF) | The joint is also at least three times the size range, and never under 1/16 in (1.5 mm) |
| Size rangeANSI A137.1-2022 (TileLetter) | Porcelain over 6 in: ±0.50% or 0.08 in calibrated, ±0.25% or 0.03 in rectified, whichever is less |
| Floor flatnessANSI A108.02 (Laticrete) | Tile with an edge of 15 in (375 mm) or more: 1/8 in in 10 ft (3 mm in 3 m) and 1/16 in in 24 in; smaller tile 1/4 in in 10 ft |
| Mortar coverageANSI A108.5 (CTEF); Daltile | 80% average, 95% outdoors and in showers; Daltile asks 90% for large format |
| Makers who want less offsetMSI; Mapei | MSI 15% to 30%; Mapei: some makers ask for less because of the warpage in certain tiles |
| Makers’ jointsDaltile; Florim | Daltile 3/16 in when tile 15 in or longer is staggered; Florim 2 mm for one format, 3 mm for mixed formats |
| Width faultsGuangzhou market supervision, 2019 | Some wood-look tiles were cut from bigger tiles and the stated width ignored the cutting loss, so they failed the width check |
| In the check aboveOur calculation | 20 m² + 10% = 22 m²: 23 boxes of 0.96 m²; 3 + 0.8 = 3.8 mm needed, 4 mm planned; a 2 mm gap against 3 mm |

6 × 24, 6 × 36, 6 × 48 and 8 × 48 in in the US (Daltile, Emser, MSI) and 20 × 120, 22.5 × 180 and 26,5 × 180 cm in Europe (RAKO, Marazzi, Florim). The size is nominal: RAKO’s 20×120 is 198 × 1198 mm.
ANSI A108.02 4.3.8.2: where the side being offset is over 18 in, running-bond tile is offset by at most 33% unless the maker says otherwise. MSI asks for 15% to 30% on its wood-looks; Florim’s 1/3 staggered layout is the same idea.
On average at least 1/8 in (3 mm) for rectified planks or 3/16 in (4.5 mm) for non-rectified, plus the edge warpage: with 1/32 in of warpage a rectified plank needs 5/32 in. Daltile recommends 3/16 in when staggered.
For tile with an edge of 15 in or more, no more than 1/8 in in 10 ft and 1/16 in in 24 in (3 mm in 3 m), against 1/4 in in 10 ft for smaller tile.
5/16 in for Daltile’s planks, 8 to 11.3 mm for Emser’s, and 9 or 10 mm for RAKO and Florim.
Buyers ask for the nominal and actual size, thickness and edge, the caliber, the recommended joint and offset, pieces, coverage and weight per box, boxes per pallet, slip and water absorption ratings, and how many faces the print has.
