Standard Tile Sizes (2026): Metric & Imperial Formats, Thickness & Nominal vs Actual

Ceramic and porcelain tiles use standard nominal formats — 300×300, 300×600, 600×600 and 600×1200 mm (12×12 to 24×48 in) — plus large-format slabs to 1600×3200 mm; wall tiles run 6–8 mm thick, floors 8–10 mm.

LengthWidth

A tile is specified by its face length × width (the nominal size) plus a thickness; the actual work size is slightly smaller to leave room for the grout joint.

Key facts

  • The most common floor format is 600 × 600 mm (24 × 24 in); 300 × 600 mm (12 × 24 in) is the go-to wall/plank size, and squares run 300 × 300 mm to 800 × 800 mm (12 × 12 to 32 × 32 in).
  • Tiles are sold at their nominal (marketing) size but made slightly smaller: a 600 × 600 mm tile typically has a work size of 597–598 mm, with the ~3 mm difference filled by the grout joint.
  • Thickness follows use: wall tiles 6–8 mm, standard floors 8–10 mm, heavy-duty floors 10 mm+, thin gauged panels 3–6 mm and 20 mm outdoor pavers.
  • Large-format porcelain slabs reach 1600 × 3200 mm (160 × 320 cm ≈ 63 × 126 in) at just 6 mm thick.
  • Accuracy is graded: EN 14411 allows rectified porcelain ±0.6% vs ±2% non-rectified; ANSI A137.1 allows calibrated tiles ≥6 in a ±3.00% tolerance.

Put these numbers on the product photo

A spec table only helps if the buyer reads it. Many don't — shoppers routinely try to judge a product's size straight from the images, and wrong size or fit is the most-cited reason things get returned. The fix is to mark the real dimensions on the photo itself, where the buyer is already looking.

SizeMarker snaps dimension lines to the tile's edges and exports at Amazon or Alibaba size, so the measurement is accurate and legible — not a guess typed over the picture. That answers the size question up front and cuts pre-sale questions and size-driven returns.

FAQ

What is the most common tile size?

For floors, 600 × 600 mm (24 × 24 in) is the most common square; 300 × 600 mm (12 × 24 in) is the most popular wall/plank format, with 300 × 300 mm (12 × 12 in) a long-standing standard.

Why is my tile smaller than the size printed on the box?

Boxes list the nominal size, but tiles are made to a slightly smaller work size — a 600 × 600 mm tile typically measures 597–598 mm — and the difference is taken up by the grout joint (about +3 mm).

How thick are wall tiles versus floor tiles?

Wall tiles are usually 6–8 mm (≈1/4–5/16 in), standard floor tiles 8–10 mm (≈5/16–3/8 in), heavy-duty/commercial floors 10 mm or thicker and thin gauged porcelain panels 3–6 mm.

What is the largest tile / large-format slab size?

Gauged porcelain slabs go up to 1600 × 3200 mm (160 × 320 cm ≈ 63 × 126 in) at 6 mm thick, with intermediate slabs at 120 × 120, 120 × 240 and 120 × 278 cm.

What are nominal versus actual tile sizes in inches?

The US calls sizes in inches (12 × 12, 12 × 24, 24 × 24, 24 × 48), but these are nominal — a 24 × 48 in tile actually measures about 23 5/8 × 47 1/4 in (≈60 × 120 cm).

What grout joint width should I use?

TCNA rules require the joint to be at least three times the tile's facial-dimension variance and never less than 1/16 in; rectified floor tile uses a 1/8 in minimum (3/16 in for large format).

Sources & method

Every figure on this page is traced to a named source, linked under each table. Standard sizes come from published standards and established industry references; where a size is a typical range or varies by manufacturer, we say so. Sizes vary by region, model and revision — treat these as the standard reference, and confirm the exact spec of the item you are selling.
