If your chair is sold as a companion piece to a specific table, publish the pair. Scenario B: a counter-height table, 34–36 in (86–91 cm)

Target seat height: 24–26 in (61–66 cm).

Counter height is the one that generates the most wrong orders, because "counter height" is a description of a kitchen worktop, not a dimension of your product. Worktop heights vary by market and by kitchen. A 36 in worktop and a 34 in island are both routinely called counter height, and a stool matched to one is wrong for the other by two inches. Scenario C: a bar-height table, 40–42 in (102–107 cm)

Target seat height: 28–30 in (71–76 cm), with a footrest, because at this height feet do not reach the floor.

The footrest position becomes a spec of its own here: measure it from the floor, not from the seat, and publish it. A stool that clears the bar perfectly but has the footrest 4 inches too low is uncomfortable within ten minutes and gets returned as "poor quality."

Scenario D: a contract, hospitality, or public-space project

This is where the conventions stop and a rule starts. Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, section 902.3, the tops of dining surfaces and work surfaces must be 28 inches (710 mm) minimum and 34 inches (865 mm) maximum above the finished floor. Section 902.2 requires clear floor space for a forward approach plus knee and toe clearance complying with section 306.

Section 306 is the one that changes your product. Knee clearance is the space between 9 inches (230 mm) and 27 inches (685 mm) above the floor; it must be at least 30 inches (760 mm) wide and may extend no more than 25 inches (635 mm) under the element.

Translate that into a specification: for a table intended for an accessible position, nothing may intrude below 27 inches (685 mm) within the knee zone. That rules out a deep apron, a mid-height stretcher, and in many cases a four-leg base in favour of a pedestal or cantilever. If you quote contract furniture into the United States and your table has a 4 in apron on a 29 in top, it does not comply, and finding that out at installation is expensive.

Note the asymmetry: ADA regulates the table, not the chair. Accessible positions are usually specified for wheelchair users, so there is no seat-height rule to meet — but the table you supply into that position has hard limits.

Scenario E: children's and educational furniture

Two separate sets of numbers apply.

For accessible dining and work surfaces for children's use, the 2010 ADA Standards section 902.4.2 sets the tops of tables and counters at 26 inches (660 mm) minimum and 30 inches (760 mm) maximum above the floor.

For classroom furniture sold into Europe, EN 1729-1 specifies functional dimensions for chairs and tables in educational institutions, sized by body height rather than by age. It is worth knowing even if you never sell a school chair, because it is the only widely used standard that formally pairs a seat height with a table height. What to put on the listing image

Buyers do not read spec tables before they ask questions; they look at the photo. Four callouts on the product image close most of the pre-sale traffic on a dining chair:
