Appliance cutout dimensions are the one set of numbers your buyer cannot guess, and the one most export cabinet catalogs leave out. The buyer measures the cabinet you shipped, orders a dishwasher, and finds the opening is a few millimetres too narrow. Somebody now pays for the rework — and on an export order, that somebody is usually you.
This is not a design problem. It is a documentation problem. Below are the eight questions that decide whether a built-in appliance fits the cabinet you sold, answered in the order a sourcing manager actually asks them.
What are appliance cutout dimensions?
Appliance cutout dimensions are the width, height and depth of the empty opening a built-in appliance needs — measured between the inside faces of the surrounding cabinetry or the hole in the worktop — not the outside dimensions of the appliance itself.
That distinction is the whole article. GE Appliances spells it out in its own support documentation for wall ovens, noting that "the oven cut-out plus the overlap will be more than the overall oven dimensions" (GE Appliances, wall oven cut-out and overlap). Three different numbers describe one appliance, and they are not interchangeable.
Why isn't a "24-inch dishwasher" 24 inches wide?
Because the number in the model name is the opening, not the object.
This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in kitchen export, and the trade says so plainly. In a long-running cabinetmakers' knowledge base on the subject, a practitioner puts it this way: "The designation (24″, 30″ etc.) is not the actual appliance width in most cases, but the recommended opening dimension." The same thread carries the field convention for a slide-in range — "30 1/4″ is standard for a 30″ stove… Any less makes it hard for the installer and the customer" — and a blunt account of what happens when the cabinets go out before anyone checks: "we delivered and installed cabs. The appliance is built a little smaller than its nominal size so it can slide into a nominal opening. Publish the nominal size as if it were a measurement and you have published a number that is wrong by design. It is the same trap as nominal vs actual dimensions in sheet goods and lumber, transplanted into the kitchen.
Is there a standard that fixes appliance cutout dimensions?
There are standards for coordinating sizes, and they are not the same thing as a cutout table you can copy.

Read that last row twice, because it catches people. A KCMA-certified cabinet has passed load and durability testing (KCMA, Quality Cabinet Certification). It says nothing about whether a 30-inch range will fit the opening.
And the two coordinating-size standards, real as they are, sit behind a paywall — their numeric module tables are not public (NEN, NEN-EN 1116:2018; BSI, BS ISO 3055:2021). Practically, the market runs on manufacturer conventions clustered around a 60 cm module in Europe and inch-based openings in North America, and the binding number for any specific unit is the one in that model's installation instructions. The honest way to write your catalog is: state the opening you built, and tell the buyer to check it against the appliance's own template.
Cutout, overlap, overall — which one goes in the catalog?
All three, labelled. They answer different questions.

If your catalog shows only the third one — and most do — you have given the buyer the least useful of the three.
How much clearance does the appliance need around the opening?
More than the opening. Air gaps and door swing are separate from cutout, and they are where a technically correct cabinet still fails at installation.
GE publishes minimum air clearance for refrigerators as 1/8 inch up to 1 inch at each side and 1 inch above the case (GE Appliances, minimum air clearance requirements). On the rear clearance, GE's own two support pages are not identical — one gives "1″ to 2″ in the back", the other states a flat "2 inches in the back" (GE Appliances, general list of minimum air clearance requirements). That inconsistency inside a single manufacturer's documentation is exactly why you cite the model's installation sheet rather than a remembered rule of thumb.
Door swing is its own constraint. GE's measuring guide notes that without roughly 2 inches of space on the hinge side, "the refrigerator will need to be pulled out about 2-inches" for the door to open fully (GE Appliances, measuring for the perfect fit) — which changes the finished depth of the whole run. What changes when the same cabinet ships to the EU instead of the US?
The module changes, and the two modules are close enough to look interchangeable and far enough apart to fail.
A US 24-inch opening is 609.6 mm, because an inch is exactly 25.4 mm (NIST, unit conversion). The European standard niche is 60 cm — 600 mm. The gap is 9.6 mm: invisible on a rendering, decisive at the site. Bosch states the European convention directly on its own kitchen-planning site: a 60 cm niche takes a standard dishwasher, a 45 cm niche takes a slim one (All-in+ by Bosch, built-in dishwasher dimensions).
So a cabinet run built to a clean 600 mm module and shipped to a US buyer who orders a 24-inch dishwasher is, on paper, 9.6 mm short. Sometimes the tolerance absorbs it. Sometimes the installer trims a stile on site and bills the importer. Either way, nobody finds out until the container is unpacked — unless the opening was stated in both units on the catalog page in the first place.
What should the catalog page actually carry?
Six fields. Every one of them is something a buyer would otherwise email you to ask.

Here is the practical part. Those six fields are unreadable as a paragraph and unmissable as labels on the drawing itself — the opening dimension drawn on the opening, the clearance drawn behind the cabinet. What makes that work is that the numbers on the image are measured, snapped to the real edges of the object, then exported at the size your catalog or marketplace expects. That is a different job from image generation: an AI image tool will happily render a clean-looking "600 mm" onto a picture, but it never measured anything, and a plausible number in the wrong place is worse than no number at all.
