How much weight can a pallet hold? Whatever single number you just gave, it is incomplete — and your buyer's warehouse engineer already knows it. Two published Euro pallets with the same 1200 × 800 mm footprint carry two different ratings: EPAL states a safe working load of 1,500 kg for the EPAL Euro pallet, while CHEP rates its B1208A timber Euro pallet at 1,000 kg maximum loading capacity. Neither is wrong. They answer different questions.

That gap is where quotations get reopened, racks get overloaded, and somebody's insurer starts asking for the data sheet. Below are six things exporters get wrong about pallet load capacity, what the published pooler specifications and test standards actually say, and the four numbers to put on your packing spec so nobody has to guess.

Start from this: a pallet load rating is not a property of the pallet. It is a property of the pallet, the way it is supported, and the load sitting on top of it.

Myth 1: a Euro pallet holds 1,500 kg

EPAL's published specification for the EPAL Euro pallet lists length 800 mm, width 1,200 mm, height 144 mm, a weight of approximately 25 kg, and a safe working load of 1,500 kg. The same page adds a separate limit: when stacking laden pallets on a solid, even surface, the bottom-most pallet must not exceed a load of 5,500 kg.

CHEP's customer data sheet for the B1208A timber Euro pallet describes the same nominal 1200 × 800 mm footprint at 144 mm high, with a typical weight of 25–26 kg — and prints a maximum loading capacity of 1,000 kg. The footnote is the important part: that figure "includes racking (RAL, RAW) and dynamic handling when loaded."

Read the two footnotes side by side and the contradiction dissolves. EPAL publishes a working load for a pallet built and repaired to the EPAL construction standard. CHEP publishes one conservative number that already covers the worst support case its pooled pallets meet in a customer's warehouse. The footprint is identical. The rating is not a function of the footprint.

So if your product data sheet says "Euro pallet, 1,500 kg" because you read it somewhere, you have copied a number that belongs to a specific pallet specification, not to a size. The footprint is a standard pallet size; the capacity is a test result.

Myth 2: static and dynamic load are one number with a safety factor bolted on

Three terms, three physically different situations:

Dynamic load is the payload a pallet carries while it is being moved — on forklift tines or a pallet truck. Static load is the payload it carries standing still on a flat, solid floor. Racking load is the payload it carries when it is supported only at two opposite edges, with nothing underneath the middle.

They are not three safety-factored views of the same figure. Virginia Tech's Center for Packaging and Unit Load Design defines pallet load capacity as the maximum payload the pallet can handle safely, and it comes out of testing two separate properties: strength, meaning the load at which the pallet fails, and stiffness, meaning how far it deflects under a sustained load. Whichever of the two produces the lower number is the rating.

ISO 8611-3, the part of the flat-pallet standard covering maximum working loads, frames it the same way: the maximum working load is the greatest payload a pallet may be permitted to carry in a specific loading and support condition.

That clause — in a specific loading and support condition — is the whole article. A capacity figure without its support condition is a number without units.

Myth 3: if it survives the forklift it will survive the rack

Racking is usually the harsh case, and often by a wide margin. On forklift tines the load path is short and the deck barely spans anything. Across two rack beams the pallet spans its full length or width with nothing beneath the centre, the deck boards bend, and bending — not breaking — is what normally caps the rating.

The test standards cap deflection explicitly. The limits Virginia Tech cites:

A pallet can survive a strength test and still be rated lower because it sagged past the limit before it broke. And note the last row: a buyer running an automated storage and retrieval system works to a tighter deflection budget than a manual warehouse, which is why "it has always been fine in our factory" is not an answer to their question.

Stiffness also depends on material. Plastic and corrugated pallets are more deflection-limited than wood or steel at the same strength, so two pallets that fail at similar loads can be rated far apart.

Myth 4: racking across the length and racking across the width are interchangeable

Warehouses have two abbreviations for this, and they belong in your vocabulary because they will appear in your buyer's specification: RAL is racked across the length, RAW is racked across the width. Which one applies depends on which way the rack beams run relative to the pallet — and a pallet rated for one is not automatically rated for the other, because the unsupported span changes.

CHEP prints the practical version of this warning directly on the B1208A data sheet: make sure that most of the outer pallet block surface is adequately supported while racking across pallet length (RAL). In other words, the blocks need to land on the beam, not hang over it. Same pallet, same load, different beam spacing, different outcome.

If a buyer asks for a racking rating and you send back one number without saying RAL or RAW, you have not answered.

Myth 5: what sits on top does not change what the pallet can hold

It changes it more than anything else on this list. The effect is called load bridging: a rigid load that spans the whole deck carries part of the bending itself, while a flexible load dumps all of it into the deck boards.

Virginia Tech's figures make the size of this concrete. Pallet deflection fell by between 32% and 89% for most pallet designs when the same pallets were loaded with plastic pails instead of a flexible airbag. And with a fully bridging load, the centre gives an illustration in which a 48 × 40 in. two-way stringer pallet with five 3.5 in. top deckboards and 1.5 in. red oak stringers could carry as much as 27,000 lb.

Do not quote 27,000 lb to a buyer. Quote what it proves: the same pallet has an enormous range depending on what is stacked on it, which is exactly why a bare "capacity: 1,000 kg" line is close to meaningless without both the support condition and the load type. Drums, pails and bulk bags bridge badly. Cartons of dense, uniform goods bridge well. A single crated machine somewhere between.

Myth 6: the stacking limit is the pallet's load rating

Three different constraints get collapsed into one line on a lot of spec sheets, and they do not even share units.

A stacking count is a handling instruction. A bottom-pallet limit is a floor-stack constraint on the whole column. Neither is the working load, and quoting one in place of another is how a warehouse ends up loading a rack to a number that was never tested for racking.

The fourth is the one almost nobody prints, and it costs money quietly: the EPAL Euro pallet weighs approximately 25 kg and the CHEP B1208A 25–26 kg. On a 20-pallet shipment that is roughly half a tonne of pallet travelling as freight, which lands in gross weight, in chargeable weight, and in the arithmetic behind how many pallets fit in a truck. Buyers who plan loads properly will ask for it; the ones who do not will discover it on the weighbridge.

What this looks like on the packing spec

Most pallet disputes are not disputes about engineering. They are disputes about a document. A planner asking "how much weight can a pallet hold?" opens your PDF, sees "1,000 kg", assumes it applies in a rack, and specifies accordingly.

The fix is not a longer paragraph. It is a pallet drawing where each figure sits next to the thing it describes: the measured footprint and total loaded height marked on the photo, entry heights called out on the side that a fork actually enters, and each load rating printed beside the support condition it was tested in. That is the difference between a spec image and a decorated photo — the dimensions are the real measured ones, locked to the edges of the pallet in the picture, and exported at the size your buyer's export spec sheet template expects, rather than sizes typed into a caption or generated by an image tool that can produce a plausible-looking number it never measured.

A measured drawing also survives translation. "RAL 1,000 kg" printed against an arrow spanning the racked direction needs no explanation in any language; a sentence about racking orientation needs a good translator and a patient reader.

Pre-quote pallet load checklist

  • The capacity figure you are about to send names its support condition (dynamic, static floor, RAL, RAW)
  • The racking figure states the beam span or the direction of racking, not just a mass
  • The number came from the pallet's own specification or test report, not from a general article about Euro pallets
  • The load type is described (uniform cartons, drums, bags, single crated item) because bridging changes the answer
  • The stacking instruction is separated from the working load, with its own unit
  • Tare weight of the empty pallet is published alongside net and gross weight
  • Loaded height and any overhang are on the drawing, not only in a table
  • If the buyer runs automated storage, you have asked for their deflection limit before quoting
